Where –V is the username and password while trying. As shown in the following screenshot, the username and password are found which are msfadmin:msfadmin. Johnny is a GUI for the John the Ripper password cracking tool. Generally, it is used for weak passwords. To open it, go to Applications → Password Attacks → johnny.
- Click 'Reset password', it will show you the 'Password Reset Wizard'. Step 2: Click 'NEXT' and select your USB password key disk drive to reset the password with a new one. Step 3: Then you can use the new password enter your computer. Note: The USB password reset disk only used in a certain account which you have created before.
- The first screen that displays will be the password screen and here you may put in your phine password should you have one. The password will be retained for the CrackUtil session in an unencrypted program variable. This is a minor security risk since the password may remain in the PC’s memory after you exit CrackUtil.
I recently upgraded to the official, Verizon-blessed 4.7.0.148 version of the Storm OS. However, because I am connected to my work's Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES), it's not as simple as just getting the 'over the air' upgrade.
Blackberry's connected to corporate email via BES are essentially at the mercy of the company as to what features are allowed and when updates are made available to the phone. The features are controlled by an IT Policy that is provisioned to the phone at the time of Enteprise Activation.
In some companies, this isn't a big deal as they don't place many restrictions on the phone. In others, the IT department is so paranoid, the phone is essentially relegated to a LCD numberpad.
So, for those with Blackberry Storms connected to BES - here is the approach to upgrading the phones OS / firmware:
- Open Blackberry Desktop Manager; check for updates by clicking on the 'Check for Updates' link in the lower right of the screen. The most current version is 4.7.0.37
- IMPORTANT: Connect your phone to computer and use Blackberry Desktop Manager to perform a backup of the phone's content. You'll need this later.
- After backup is complete disconnect phone.
- Download the latest version of the phone's OS (currently 4.7.0.148 - Verizon Storm phones) to your desktop by going to: http://na.blackberry.com/eng/update/
- After the download is complete, close Blackberry Desktop Manager, and double-click the installation file. Follow the prompts and it will uncompress the files and essentially prepare your computer to upgrade the phone.
- Once the install process has completed, open Blackberry Desktop Manager again and connect your phone to the computer.
- The phone and Desktop Manager will synch and you will be prompted with an update notification. Select OK.
- It will take about 30 minutes for the phone to run through the upgrade process which will will include the phone rebooting itself.
- After successful upgrade you will face 1, potentially 2 issues. First issue, your phone will need to go through the Enterprise Activation process again to connect with your company's BES. You will need to obtain a new Enterprise Activation Password from IT in order to do this. The second issue may be loss of ringer sounds during incoming calls. In place of the ringtone, the phone will give 3 short, soft, tones instead. Remember back to the IT Policy I referenced above? Well this is causing that. So before you go ahead with the Enterprise Activation process, you'll need to do step 10.
- Download and install CrackUtil on your computer. This simple, and powerful, utility will allow you to reset the Storm's IT Policy back to the factory setting. It will also wipe out all of your messages and programs in the process, but that's why you took that backup in Step 2.
- Perform an IT Policy reset using CrackUtil. I won't bother going into all the detail about how to do this since it is very well written in the Crackberry forum post I linked to above. The IT Policy reset will take about 45 minutes to complete. The screen on the phone will turn white, you'll see messages like 'Wiping Handheld Data' and the familiar rotating clock icon. At times, it will seem like the phone is hanging. Just be patient, this process takes a while so put the phone down, walk away and come back in an hour.
- Once the phone has been wiped back to factory settings, open up Blackberry Desktop Manager again and connect your phone to the computer.
- Restore the phone's data using the backup you created in Step 2.
- You may notice that you no longer see your browser. This is not uncommon. To rememdy this go to: Options -> Advanced Options -> Host Routing Tables -> Blackberry Menu Key -> Register Now.
- Obtain Enterprise Activation device Password from your IT organization
- Perform Enterprise Activation (Setup -> Email Setup -> Select Blackberry Enterprise Server radio button -> Next -> enter corporate email address, Enterprise Activation Password).
- Lastly, you'll most likely need to re-Accept the software license agreements for things like AOL IM, Windows Live IM, BB App World, Facebook, etc. I noticed on my phone that the Facebook app was not responding, so I simply reinstalled it - problem solved. You may find similar minor issues like that.
